This post is all about what I wore to recruitment and some other ideas I saw other girls wear when rushing a sorority.
Hey y’all! It’s been 5 days here in the south and I’ve learned a few things (notice the y’all?)
I am taking part in sorority recruitment at University of South Carolina a week before school starts.
The biggest piece of advice I have gotten is to “wear what makes you feel comfortable” which I feel like is true but also complete bull shit.
Sororities will deny that they are looking at what you wear but we know it’s true. Because when you look at a gal, you think “oh she looks cute!” or at least I know I do.
Now, I don’t believe that this is what sororities base their decisions on at all. I just think you don’t want to look like a hot mess.
However, if you are like me, skirts and dresses aren’t you thing. So dressing for recruitment seems daunting.
Rounds one: Open House
We were given two tee shirts that we will be wearing with unique bottoms for a total of four days.
Most people use this opportunity to wear cute skirts, however since that’s not my thing I went a different route.
I had a random urge to wear my denim overalls. I love my overalls. They go with my chacos and my flannel and really anything. You can dress it up or dress it down. It’s a beautiful concept.
To be honest, I was really nervous to wear these. I thought I would look too country, or informal, or that I would stand out like a sore thumb.
I received lots of encouragement and actually felt really good about myself. People who love & know me pointed out that if a sorority didn’t like my overalls they definitely weren’t for me.
The second house I went to, girls were obsessing over my outfit and I felt so special. And ironically, girls that never mentioned my overalls were from houses that I didn’t like anyways.
Round two: Philanthropy
For my philanthropy round, I chose to tie my shirt in a fun way, and wear high top shoes and a dainty necklace. The necklace was a map of the world which I absolutely love, and it is perfect for the philanthropy round.
General Round One and Two Tips:
1. Definitely find a skort! The shorts that look like a skirt from the front are amazing. You will be sitting in the grass, laying on the floor, and really taking any break you can get. It’s annoying to worry about flashing everyone.
2. Pick something patterned! Everyone wears black or white skirts. It gets boring. I saw lots of cute girls in patterns and it really made them stand out.
3. Earrings! I hate earrings but a lot of girls wore statement earrings to dress up the drab T-shirt and they looked amazing.
4. Do what makes you feel confident. I don’t wear makeup, and I don’t frequently doll up my hair. I decided to do neither in effort to “be myself”. But I felt very insecure because the others girls put lots of time into their appearance. I would say not to over do it, and don’t be fake. But dress up for your self a bit to feel good.
Round Three: Sisterhood
This was my favorite round! This was the first time that I could completely chose what I wanted to wear and dress up a bit.
I chose to wear this adorable romper which was so comfortable and really stood out.
The guidelines for round three is to pretty much wear sundresses, but I saw girls wear rompers like me, jumpsuits and some skirts with nice shirts.
Round Four: Preference Night
This is when you go to your top two houses! Everybody dresses in fancy dresses (picture homecoming or graduation dresses).
I wore my graduation dress and it was perfect for the occasion. However, lots of girls wore white including the sorority girls.
So a color or pattern might be fun to stick out.
Heels is pretty much a must for this round. I also went for subtle jewelry.
BID DAY!!!!!!
You really don’t need to worry about what to wear on bid day. Literally just wear athletic shorts and a tank top and they will dress you up with
ALL. THE. GLITTER.
I ran home to Pi Phi which had a sweet like candy theme and pink everything! Every sorority had such fun themes for bid day you really can’t go wrong.
I hope you enjoyed this post or found it helpful if you are going into rush! While I didn’t enjoy the recruitment process, I’m happy to be where I am with Pi Phi and can’t wait to get to know my sisters.
Much love & good luck to future PNMs.
Sincerely, Meghan Ann
