Tips For Moving Out Of Your Dorm

Hey Ya’ll! I I flew to South Carolina to move out of my dorm last Monday. I caught up with my close friends, ate at my favorite restaurants, and packed up my stuff for the drive home. It felt extremely overwhelming to me so I wanted to share some of my tips to help you when you are moving out of your dorm!

I live far and left my car on campus, so I decided to fly down and drive my car back. However, if you read my packing tips to make moving into college easier than you know that I moved in with a big truck. My two door jeep wasn’t going to cut it.

My mom and I had to donate a lot of my food, laundry detergent, and cleaning supplies because there was no room in my car. I also had a dresser from IKEA that had gotten a bit beaten up so I donated that too.

I also sold a bunch of my stuff to incoming freshman such as my headboards, or a foam egg crate.

The biggest key to my success with moving out of my dorm was this.

Rightline Gear Ace 2 Car Top Carrier, 15 cu ft, Weatherproof, Attaches With or Without Roof Rack

We bought this car top carrier from Amazon and it was amazing. There was so much space for a ton of my stuff. It felt very secure and durable which gave me some peace of mind too. The only down side was that it did not come with a lock. I had to put my invaluable things in there in case it got stolen over night.

Another tip I have for you when moving out of your dorm is to pack your clothes on the hanger! Just fold them into an open bag so that you can easily hang them back up when you get home.

An open bag is perfect for move in/out and literally costs $2 at IKEA.

For your smaller random things, like books, pens, etc, use the IKEA bag that zips. So convenient.

The zipper bags are about $5

When you are packing your stuff, I would recommend that you start with your clothes first. Once your clothes and shoes are all packed up, then get your bedding. Next, you can clear your walls and shelves. The little things like notebooks and pens can be last.

I made the mistake of doing the little things first. My room was a big mess. Whoops.

A really big tip I have is to pack things you won’t need over the summer in separate bags. That way, things that will be going straight back to college can just be kept packed up in the garage. An example of these things would be shower curtains, bath towels, pillows, and school supplies.

I’ll admit, I only had a few bags that I actually spent the time to pack like that. It does take a lot of time to separate your stuff into what you will use and what you won’t. This saves you time in the long run though.

Moving out of your dorm up is honestly so much easier than moving in. However, both are exhausting and emotional. I hope that even with social distancing that you have the opportunity to get closure with your campus and dorm. In just three short months we will hopefully be back!
